Page Rank is a rank assigned to each and every web page by Google. This rank is based on several criteria and it is an important measure of a websites success.
Page rank is an important metric. According to Google (from Wikipedia):
“PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.”
A web page’s page rank is determined from both the number of external links to the page and the page rank of the external page containing the link. Links from pages with high page rank are considered more valuable and incoming links from websites with high page rank directly improve your page’s rank.
One way to view the page rank for a single web page is to install the Google Toolbar in you web browser. The URL for each web page that you visit is transmitted to Google and the toolbar shows the page rank for the currently visited page.
Ultimately, or course, you want your company’s web pages to show up at the top of search results. Although many factors play a role as to where your site shows up in search results, page rank is the most tangible and the most accessible.
An important part of an overall SEO strategy is building linking relationships with other high quality web sites.
